Provenance

How we date a piece.

Before anything is listed we check four things. Choose a number to see what we look for.

  1. Hand-cut dovetails are slightly uneven and a little loose. Perfectly regular ones were cut by machine, which points to a later date.

  2. Handles, hinges and screws change with the decades. Slotted, hand-filed screws and worn brass tell us a piece is early.

  3. Genuine age shows as even wear on edges and where hands rest, under a patina that can never be rushed.

  4. Saw marks, shrinkage and colour change on unseen surfaces show how the wood was cut and how long it has aged.
